How to Write a Covering Letter

A good covering letter can grab the reader’s attention to your CV, by highlighting your key attributes and skills directly relevant to the position you are applying for.

Most recruiters prefer the application to be submitted by email, as it would be quicker and easier to process. Email text is more appropriate for the covering letter, rather than a separate second attachment. If you have to send your application by post, then write on one side of A4 with the same quality paper and font style as your CV.

Covering Letter Do’s

  • Keep it neat, formal, positive, polite and enthusiastic

  • Briefly introduce yourself, and indicate the position you are applying for (or the type of positions and sectors you’re interested in).

  • Mention where the position was advertised

  • Highlight your key attributes and any experience directly relevant to the position.

  • Try to personalise your covering letter to the position or career path you are interested in.

  • Check spelling, grammar and overall presentation

Covering Letter Don’ts

  • Don’t sound cocky or talk too much about yourself

  • Don’t make it too long. Keep it simple. Don’t bore the reader with too many words!

  • Don’t ramble. Keep it concise and to the point
